The Pros and Cons on Helton

Todd HeltonA migraine scuttled my plans to blog over the weekend, but death itself couldn't keep me from commenting on a proposed trade that would reportedly bring Todd Helton from the Colorado Rockies to Boston for Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez.

In the interest of full disclosure, I acknowledge that I love Mike Lowell. Like many Red Sox fans, I initially saw him as the guy we had to take in order to get Josh Beckett from Florida, but before spring training 2006 was over, I realize he was a valuable asset in his own right. By the end of the season, he was clearly the anchor of a phenomenal defensive infield, one that alas has since been disassembled. I'm not ashamed to say that I have become somewhat emotionally attached to him.

Nonetheless, I am trying to look at this trade rumor dispassionately. In that spirit, I present for your perusal the following points, in no particular order:

On the other hand:

But on the other hand:

The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman quotes Sox pitcher Josh Beckett as calling his buddy Helton "a tough-ass out" who plays hard, is a good teammate, and wants very badly to play in Boston. But Beckett also asks, "[W]ho do you give up for him, what's the price? I don't envy the GMs at all on this one."

If I were the Red Sox GM, there would be no dilemma. On balance, this looks like a good deal for the Sox until you consider the big question mark about how Helton will be able to hit at sea level. It's a risk I would not take.

I was wondering if you would give our school a link from your website until March 17th.

We are having a raffle for a 2004 world series autographed bat that a local car dealership donated to us.

The website we have created is www.redsoxbat.com

Our school is www.villaaugustina.org

We are raising money for our school and a local group that helps children at risk.

Please let me know if you can help us out with a link or a mention on your website.

We are nonprofit and working really hard to get this off the ground.

Thank you so much!
